Retired L.A. judge advocates for literacy in communities of color |

Judge James Reese may have retired 18 years ago from his place on the Los Angeles Superior Court/Municipal Court bench, but at age 93 he is still influencing people's lives through community service. In his time spent as a judge, Reese discovered that books can act as the catalyst for the change he wants to see. Last year, he launched a community literacy program targeting “at-risk” boys from communities of color. The program aims to keep more minorities out of jail by simply teaching them, at a young age, how to read — even if that means teaching one boy at a time. As a municipal court judge in Compton, he noticed an unfortunate trend among African-American male offenders. "In the '70s and '80s, I sent most African-American boys with first-time misdemeanors in the age range of 18-23 to a community service progress program," said Reese. "I found out these boys could not fill out their applications because they could not read.” Read More. |
