| Innovative drug courts need help |

FLORIDA - Drug courts work. They've proven to be a less costly alternative to simply putting drug users in jail. So it's almost a crime to see an innovative criminal justice program that actually saves taxpayers money held back from reaping better results. The state needs to develop a more generous and consistent funding source for its 105 drug courts, which depend on two-year federal grants and county tax dollars to operate. The state's annual $1.3 million appropriation doesn't come close to matching the benefits it receives from filling fewer jail and prison beds with non-violent drug users. Florida Gov. Rick Scott says he wants to curtail the costs of the prison system, mostly by outsourcing operations and services to private companies. But more support should be given to those on the front lines who see ways to save money and better serve their communities. Read More. |
