Theater program at prison looks to continue |

WISCONSIN - performing William Shakespeare. But it wasn’t until after Leair was arrested for armed robbery in 1999 that he found his love for the bard. During his time at Racine Correctional Institution, Leair, 33, discovered his passion for theater through the Shakespeare Prison Project, a project aimed to teach inmates about life and humanity through performing Shakespeare. “I was introduced to Shakespeare in high school, but I fell in love with him through the Shakespeare project,” he said. “When I was involved with the process, it gave me a greater depth and appreciation and understanding that Shakespeare’s language is a language upon itself.” The project was founded in 2004 by Jonathon Shailor, an associate professor of communication at the University of Wisconsin–Parkside, 900 Wood Road. Since the Wisconsin Department of Corrections canceled the project in 2008, due to potential security risks, Shailor has been working to see it reinstated. Read More. |
