Would-be cadets take agility test at NVC Police Academy |

CALIFORNIA - “Ready?” asked John Nunez, a retired California Department of Corrections captain and training coordinator at the Napa Valley College Police Academy, as would-be police cadets lined up to take the physical agility exam each applicant has to pass to enter a law enforcement academy. As Nunez’s whistle sounded, the 17 male and female candidates, including a U.S. Air Force mechanic crew chief, a Costco clerk, a retail clerk, a Marine Corps reservist, and a stay-at-home mom, took turns to perform a minimum of 17 push-ups in 1 minute, followed by 25 sit-ups, also in 1 minute. All passed. But the next portion of the state-certified physical tests proved to be more challenging for some. Three failed to run the 1.5 miles around the track in 17 minutes or less. “This is not a hard physical exam,” Nunez said afterward of the exam that NVC’s Police Academy administers once a month. “If this is difficult, it’s going to be twice as difficult,” he said, referring to the police academy’s physical training.
