No easy solutions to county’s gang problem |

OREGON - If there was any obvious takeaway from Saturday’s all-day gang-prevention symposium at Lane Community College, it was that, whatever the extent of the gang problem in Lane County might be, solutions won’t be easy to find. The public discussion was raw, emotionally charged and, at times, accusatory, as 42 tables of participants and a panel made up primarily of law enforcement officials, academics and educators grappled with an issue that carries social, economic and racial undertones. Much of the conversation focused on keeping at-risk youth from becoming ensnared in gang culture. But Dominic Monroe, at 20 one of the youngest faces in the room, asked angrily: “Where are the youth voices here?” Police officials, who played a key role in organizing the event because of what they see as a lack of knowledge about and understanding of local gang activity, faced their share of criticism as well. “Using law enforcement to solve gang problems is never going to work,” said George Brown, 44, a ex-offender who moved to Springfield from Seattle a year ago, a change of scenery which he says has helped turn his life around.
