ILLINOIS - Menard Correctional Center went on lockdown Saturday after an assault on one of its staff members. The prison went on a level 1 lockdown around 6 p.m. when a corrections officer was assaulted in the East House, according to American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Staff Representative Ty Petersen. The officer suffered contusions and bruises, but received no major injuries, said Petersen. Illinois Department of Corrections Spokeswoman Stacey Solano confirmed the assault and said one warning shot was fired during the incident. The facility medical staff examined the officer and released him to follow-up with his personal physician. “The department is investigating and takes assault incidents with extreme seriousness,” Solano said. “The safety and security of staff and inmates remains the department's top priority. Petersen said the employee attacked was recently transferred to the facility from Tamms Correctional Center, which was part of Gov. Pat Quinn’s planned closure of several state facilities.
