Some prosecutors and judges want to lock more people up and keep them there longer, even as the state’s bill for housing inmates grows. The Mississippi Department of Corrections’ budget is $339 million, and the department ran a deficit for this year of $30 million taxpayers have to cover. Mississippi has the second-highest incarceration rate in the nation, which has prompted Corrections Commissioner Christopher Epps to advocate alternative sentencing for mostly nonviolent, first-time offenders. Also, Epps has attempted to whittle away the prison population through early release programs, house arrest and probation. He wants to see more inmates placed on electronic monitoring. Read More. |

Having the second-highest incarceration in the United States, Mississippi needs to support Commissioner Epps. Alternative sentencing, early release programs, house arrest, and probation for qualified offenders will significantly reduct the inmate population (and address budget issues). Governor Phil Bryant and residents of Mississippi should be proud to have Commissioner Epps as their leader in corrections. He is the longest serving commissioner to the state, and is a nationally recognized professional. Currently Mr. Epps is President of the American Correctional Association (ACA). Deputy Commissioner (Emmitt Sparkman)is also known throughout the United States as an experienced warden and leader. The Epps and Sparkman team would only recommend solutions that are safe and of value to the inmate population and local communities. Bob Hood Warden (Ret.)
