Sheriff accused of improper inmate labor use

A Coastal Empire sheriff could face an investigation, according to a report in a Georgia newspaper. A story in the Augusta Chronicle on Sunday says the Screven County (Ga.) sheriff illegally used inmates to do work on private property.
Sheriff Mike Kile is accused of routinely sending inmates to work at local churches, private organizations and the homes of his deputies. Under state law, inmates may work only on public grounds like roads and government buildings, but not on private property.
The newspaper says 37 former inmates were interviewed for the story. Sheriff Kile declined to comment on the allegations.
