Wake Forest police chief is no cowboy – just a finalist for national award |

NORTH CAROLINA - Wake Forest University Police Chief Regina Lawson grew up riding horses and watching Gunsmoke in Lawsonville, the small Stokes County farming community where her family settled many generations ago. “I always wanted to be a cowboy,” said Lawson, 50, who was recently named a finalist for Campus Safety magazine’s 2012 Director of the Year award. Lawson joined WFU’s police department in 1989 as assistant chief. She planned to stay just five years before continuing on to the FBI. The university appointed Lawson as police chief in 1992. In the 23 years since she joined the WFU force, this cowboy-turned-chief-cop has led the department as it’s grown from seven officers to 65 employees who handle patrol, investigations, special projects, communications and administration.
