| Prison van rear-ended, eight inmates injured |

Alabama state troopers say eight inmates were injured, one seriously, in an accident last week on Highway 231 south near Montgomery. Troopers said the inmates were riding in a Department of Corrections van when it was rear-ended by another vehicle. The accident occurred about 1:45 p.m. Corrections Department spokesman Brian Corbett did not know where the inmates were being transported at the time of the accident. He said the eight were treated at Baptist Medical Center in Montgomery. The nature of their injuries was not immediately known. Troopers said a preliminary finding indicates the driver who caused the accident may have fallen asleep at the wheel. An investigation continues. |
