State prison officials today will highlight the 4.9 percent drop in the recidivism rate over the last two years in Florida. The rate reflects the number of prisoners who commit new crimes after their release and return to state custody as measured over a defined length of time. In recent years, roughly one of out every three released prisoners will commit new crimes and return to Florida prisons. In a report last April, the Department of Corrections showed the recidivism rate has been on the decline since 2005, measuring prisoners who returned to the system over a three-year period after their release.
