One-third of corrections officers have PTSD |

OREGON - Department of Corrections Director Colette Peters told a joint subcommittee on Monday that about one-third of corrections officers have symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, a much higher prevalence than in the general population. Peters gave an overview of her department to the Joint Ways and Means Subcommittee on Public Safety, and in it, she gave statistics on her workers and the inmates they oversee. She said corrections officials have PTSD symptoms at a higher rate than firefighters or members of the military, and a rate four-times as high as the general population. She said Portland State University is studying the effects of the condition for the DOC, and Oregon Health Sciences University is working on a wellness and coaching program to help officers who have PTSD.
