Massachusetts lawmakers sent Gov. Mitt Romney a bill on Tuesday updating the state's sex offender laws. But they failed to meet a deadline for changes to the state's drunken driving laws that could mean $7 million less in federal dollars for road and bridge projects. Lawmakers in the House also voted 146-4 in favor of a bill to expand the state's DNA database to include everyone convicted of a felony. Currently the database only includes those convicted of violent crimes. The bill has already been approved by the Senate. The sex offender bill sent to Romney brings the state into compliance with federal sex offender laws. The decision not to act on the drunken driving bill by an Oct. 1 deadline means $7 million will be transferred from road and bridge repairs to highway safety programs. The House and Senate next meet in formal sessions on Thursday. |
