Use of Tasers in Michigan's corrections system keeps peace, saves money |

LANSING -- Tasers are allowing the Michigan Department of Corrections to keep the peace in prisons and save the state money, a department spokesman said Friday. Use of the electric stun guns began as an experiment in December 2011 in five of the state's 31 prisons. It has since expanded to all prisons, except to the medical facility for mentally ill people, spokesman Russ Marlan said. Buying the Tasers will have cost the department about $1.1 million by the end of this year. Most corrections officers still don't carry Tasers, Marlan said. About 450 are in use across the system, and they're mostly carried by officers who work in areas such as dining and exercise yards where prisoners gather in groups. Read More. |
