| Michigan prison costs high despite fewer inmates, staff |

LANSING — Despite significant drops in the number of inmates and prison staff, it still costs $2 billion to run the Michigan Department of Corrections — the single biggest drain on the state's general fund. The static nature of the department's budget, de-spite a 15 percent drop in the number of inmates since 2006, is an increasing source of frustration for lawmakers. "Each and every one of us can find other places we would like to spend" the money, said Sen. John Proos, R-St. Joseph, chairman of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Corrections. The 2013-2014 budget Gov. Rick Snyder presented Feb. 7 shows $2 billion in total spending on corrections in 2014, up slightly from 2013. A similar budget is projected for 2015. Read More. |
