| Bard faculty member explains the college’s initiative for inmates |

NEW YORK , HUDSON — Members of Hudson’s Rotary Club received an education Monday from Bard College faculty member Daniel Karpowitz about the Bard Prison Initiative as it relates to the college’s aims. Private institutions, Karpowitz said, should be operating in the public’s interest — especially for the incarcerated. Employed as the initiative’s director of policy and academics, Karpowitz detailed how BPI’s combination of remedial coursework with the college’s most intensive liberal arts classes helps inmates to a higher education that nobody can take away. “This program coincided with an overwhelming period of massive incarceration,” Karpowitz explained. “These were students coming up from the city, who saw the number of kids coming upstate through the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision and recognized themselves.” Read More. |
