Changing thinking with the DOC

VIRGINIA - The Department of Corrections District 16 Probation and Parole Office, based in Wytheville, has partnered with community stakeholders to offer the National Institute of Corrections “Thinking for a Change” Program to offenders who are interested in availing themselves to a different way of thinking and thus what is hoped to be a different way of behaving and ultimately, living.

Correctional agencies can consider the T4C program as one option to address the cognitive, social, and emotional needs of their offender populations in an effort to change lives and ultimately reduce recidivism. As a result of partnering with some interested and motivated community volunteers, District 16 Probation and Parole was able to offer this program in the late fall of 2012.

As members of the Wythe Substances Abuse Coalition as well as the Southwest Virginia Re-entry Council, Pastor Donn Sunshine and Recovery Specialist George Jackson took it upon themselves to take advantage of a training opportunity offered by the Department of Corrections to non-DOC employees, enabling them to become facilitators of the T4C Program. This summer, Sunshine and Jackson completed the five-day program, which required a tremendous time commitment, and volunteered to offer this program to the Probation and Parole Department and the individuals they supervise. Sara King of Bland County Department of Social Services under the authority and blessing of her director, Kimberly Sobey, also completed the program and has since offered her services to our agency. King will hopefully be facilitating a program with us in the very near future, as coordination of the referrals and scheduling continue.
