Taxpayers helping pay rent for some released prisoners |

WASHINGTON - EAST BREMERTON — Kenneth might never have gotten out of prison were it not for the state’s Department of Corrections’ footing three months of his rent. As a sex offender completing a prison sentence of just less than 10 years, he had to have an address to call home or the DOC may not have let him go. Under the state’s housing voucher program, inmates who didn’t get in trouble while in prison but have no place to live when they are released can get free rent — up to $500 per month for up to three months. “The opportunity gave me a base to start to succeed in society,” he said. “A lot of us wouldn’t be able to get out otherwise.” Read More. |
