MARYLAND - CHESTER - The hum of a lonely Scottish bagpipe pierced the silence of a dark St. Christopher's Catholic Church on Wednesday, Feb. 13, during the Queen Anne's County Fallen Heroes Memorial Service in tribute of local law enforcement officers and first responders who gave their lives in the line of duty. Piper Randy Welsh, in traditional Scottish garb, performed several verses of the song “Amazing Grace,” following a presentation of red roses on behalf of local Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 108 to the family and friends of nine servicemen who died while on duty. The ceremony marked the 12th straight year that the event has been held on the same day in February. It began in 2002 following the death of two police officers, Dfc. Jason Schwenz of the Queen Anne's County Sheriff's Office and Patrolman Michael S. Nickerson of the Centreville Police Department, who were fatally shot on Feb. 13, 2001, while responding to a call in Centreville. LaMonte E. Cooke, director of the Queen Anne's County Department of Corrections, delivered the keynote speech at the service. The longest-tenured director in the history of the department, he spoke of the unwavering brotherhood shared by the county's numerous public safety divisions. He joined several other speakers, including attorney John Mark McDonald and St. Christopher's pastor, Rev. Paul F. Jennings Jr., who has presided over every service since it began. Read More. |
