DECATUR — When master dog groomer Kim Schwalbach retired in 2009, she expected that the salon she founded and operated for seven years in the Decatur women’s prison would carry on without her. But the Department of Corrections couldn’t find anyone to take her place. “I don’t know why they couldn’t find anyone else,” said Schwalbach, a teacher of the grooming arts and passionate dog lover. “Maybe people in general are afraid of working in prison.” In August, Schwalbach came out of retirement to reopen the Correctional Ladies Improving Pets, or CLIP, salon, which was successful during its initial run at teaching inmates marketable skills and improving the adoptability of shelter dogs.
