ARKANSAS - West Frankfort -- For the many inmates, a 60-year prison sentence would be equivalent to death. Life outside the confines of cement and rows of barbwire fence is forgotten history. However, for Stacey Smith, the daunting years awaiting her would prove to be a new lease on life. Within five years of being in prison, Stacey —whose own personal life is testimony to the power of forgiveness and hope — became a Christian and first female ex-convict to receive the privilege of becoming a a chaplain within the same walls that once confined her. Carrying out her sentence at McPherson Prison in Arkansas, she began to participate in the faith-based program called Principles & Application of Life or PAL, a 6- to 12-month training and service centered on personal commitment and growth in Christ.
