Regional jail system moving foward on getting more beds |

ABINGDON, Va. –– The process to add space for more inmates within the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail system moves forward this month, as jail officials plan to ask localities for help financing the project. The project will add 512 beds between three facilities of the jail system, said Steve Clear, superintendent of the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail Authority. The beds will be added to jails in Abingdon, Haysi and Duffield, he said. The jail authority also operates a jail in Tazewell, but it is too expensive to add to that facility, Clear said, because any additions would have to be made by adding stories to the building. The preliminary budget for the expansion is about $34 million. The 2011 Virginia General Assembly voted that there was a need to expand the facilities and decided to pay half of the cost, Clear said. That leaves about $17 million for localities to pay. “Right now we’re in the design phase and trying to get a price and going to member jurisdictions to get financed,” he said. Those jurisdictions include Washington, Smyth, Russell, Tazewell, Buchanan, Dickenson, Lee, Wise and Scott counties, as well as the city of Norton. Read More. |
