Staph outbreak leads to warden's suspension

The Gloucester County (N.J.) freeholder board suspended the county prison warden Wednesday, saying he misled a Citizens Advisory Board over the breakout of a drug-resistant staph infection at the facility.
Warden John Tevoli faces a two-week suspension without pay effective Oct. 4.
About 110 corrections officers guard the prison's nearly 300 inmates and roughly 75 of those officers attended Wednesday's freeholder meeting to oppose Tevoli.
Sgt. Bob Graci said the group sought Tevoli's firing.
Graci said two officers are out on disability as a result of the staph infection. The officers angrily stormed out of the freeholders meeting following the announcement.
Tevoli and prison head nurse Lynn Heiss told the Citizens Advisory Board at its monthly meeting Sept. 1 there were no new outbreaks of staph, a contagious skin infection.
At that time, three corrections officers and four inmates were being treated for methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA, a drug-resistant form of the infection, Freeholder-Director Stephen M. Sweeney said.
He said Tevoli, hired in 2003 when the county freeholders assumed control of the prison from the sheriff's department, faced a variety of penalties for misleading the board, from a written reprimand to termination.
Deputy County Administrator Chad Bruner said because Heiss is a civil service employee, her punishment will be determined through a hearing with the county personnel director.
Neither Tevoli nor Heiss could be reached for comment.
