Arizona prisoner health lawsuit gets class-action status |

A U.S District judge on Wednesday granted class-action status to a lawsuit accusing the Arizona Department of Corrections of providing inadequate health care for prisoners. The judge’s action means the suit filed last year on behalf of 14 inmates is now expanded to cover all current and future prisoners housed in the state system, said Dan Pochoda, legal director for the American Civil Liberties Union of Arizona. “It’s a very important win today,” Pochoda said. “Obviously this will have a greater impact on the state. The ruling is something that would cause the state to take notice, as it should have years ago, because of the harm that was caused and, clearly, the unnecessary deaths.” About 33,000 inmates are incarcerated by DOC in 10 complexes statewide, according to court documents.
