A Rikers Island jail inmate died Sunday after he was beaten to death by six others in a common area. The victim, Tyree Abney, 21, first was attacked by three inmates at about 1:30 p.m., Department of Correction spokesman Tom Antenen said. A correction officer tried to break up the fight, but three other inmates joined in the attack, he said. The officer pulled the injured inmate away from the group, but the inmate collapsed and was pronounced dead at the scene. It didn't appear that any weapon had been used in the attack, which took place in an area shared by about 50 inmates in the cell block, Antenen said. The inmate had been in custody on a charge of criminal sale of a controlled substance and had recently transferred to the cell block. The six inmates believed to be involved in the assault were being questioned. No charges have been filed so far. The exact cause of death is to be determined by the city medical examiner's office. The Rikers Island facility is the correction department's main base of operations, with 10 jails housing an average of more than 16,000 inmates a day. |
