The lifetime of service and ultimate sacrifice of Deputy Barbara Pill, who was killed last year in the line of duty, were honored tonight when Pill was named the Brevard County sheriff’s deputy of the year for 2012. “This deputy is the only recipient of this year’s highest award, the Medal of Valor, which is presented to a member who performs an act of heroism,” Sheriff Wayne Ivey said. He recognized Pill’s dedication in her more than 30-year law enforcement career and work to help at-risk children and help senior citizens who have been victimized. “As law enforcement officers we understand the importance of our role in society to protect the citizens within our community,” he said. “We are committed to run into harm’s way and not to retreat.
