Thirty officers have been fired from two Louisiana juvenile prisons this year as the state tries to reduce violence at the facilities. The state Office of Youth Development oversees juvenile prisons in Louisiana. According to Simon Gonsoulin, assistant secretary of the agency, the officers were fired as part of an investigation of allegations of inappropriate behavior of the staff. The information was included in a letter written to Juvenile Court Judge Andrea Price Janzen, who chairs the Louisiana Juvenile Justice Planning and Coordination Board. That board recommends how the state should organize the juvenile justice bureaucracy. The officers were fired from the Jetson prison in East Baton Rouge Parish and the Swanson prison in Ouachita Parish. Frequent critic of the state's juvenile justice system, David Utter, applauded the firings. He says the move represents a step forward by the Blanco administration. Gonsoulin says state police investigators have begun investigating complaints against the officers who were fired. |
