Oklahoma Graduates Women from New Prison Diversion Program |

Oklahoma County, the most populous county in the state of Oklahoma and site of the state capitol, celebrated yesterday the graduation of four women from its newly developed intensive rehabilitation program called ReMerge. This is a small but bright light shining at the end of the tunnel for Oklahoma women who are convicted of non-violent crimes in a state where the female incarceration rate of 121 women among each 100,000 are imprisoned -- twice that of the national average . The ReMerge program , modeled after a similar program, Women in Recovery in Tulsa County, is an intensive program of training and education for nonviolent female offenders who qualify for program entry. These are women who have been convicted who, instead of becoming inmates at one of the state's prisons, instead get an opportunity to turn their lives around. ReMerge is a four-phase program that requires approximately a year in total to complete. The diversion program is a private/public partnership between the Oklahoma County District Attorney and Public Defender's offices, the Oklahoma Department of Corrections, the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services and nonprofit agencies participating in assisting women who are nonviolent offenders.
