Four McDowell County (N.C.) Jail escapees didn't get far last Saturday afternoon before they wrecked their stolen getaway vehicle and were captured. The four men escaped from the McDowell County Jail about 2:15 p.m. Saturday after they overpowered an officer, stole keys and exited the jail through a fire escape door. They then scaled a fence, traveled on foot about a mile and stole a pickup from a residence, said Sam Arrowood, chief deputy of the McDowell County Sheriff's Department. Saturday's escape was the third such incident at the jail since 2001. Deputies caught the escapees within an hour and a half when they spotted them heading north on U.S. 221 in the stolen pickup, Arrowood said. The four men led deputies on a five-mile pursuit before they wrecked the truck. Police immediately took three of the escapees into custody but had to call in a canine team to find the fourth. All four were uninjured and returned to the jail. |
