Federal Judge: California Prisons Guilty of "Ethical Violation"

SACRAMENTO -- A federal judge has accused state prison officials of committing, “serious ethical violations."

During a court hearing in Sacramento on Wednesday the judge agreed with accusations by inmates’ lawyers, saying corrections department experts shouldn’t have been talking to mentally ill prisoners about prison conditions without notifying their attorneys. "We made our case to the judge," said Deborah Hoffman, a spokesperson for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

"I felt like the judge understood our case and even said a couple of times, the constitution does not require perfection. No system is perfect, but are we providing a constitutional level of care? And the answer to that is yes."
