Breaking Free from Conventional Prison Design

Spanish architecture company OOIIO Architecture has released a new design proposal for a women’s prison in Iceland that changes the traditional sense of a correctional facility.

By engaging with the users of the building, the designers were able to provide a space which gets the best out of the building for the end user.

The architects began the design proposal by speaking directly to those who live and work in prisons and found that the worst thing for those using the building is the feeling that they are in a correctional facility. This may seem strange for this to be a problem, particularly for the prisoners, but the psychology behind design could help create an environment for the Icelandic prison which has a positive effect on those living and working there.
