Rikers’ prison moms pen lullabies for their newborns behind bars

There’s a noise you don’t expect to hear behind the prison walls of Rikers Island: the soft sound of a baby’s lullaby.

But these moms-behind-bars are getting the chance to write their own relaxing refrains with the help of a music program that encourages them to be good parents — and ultimately, strive for better futures.

Carnegie Hall’s Lullaby Project, which was held for the first time at Rikers last fall, is the latest opportunity for female inmates to bond with their newborns.

“For a group of women who have made some bad choices and have had difficulties in their lives, any support we can given them to be successful ... is a good thing,” Dora Schriro, commissioner of the city’s Department of Correction, told WNBC-TV.
