Group seeks to help teens in Upstate schools avoid crime |

SOUTH CAROLINA - “Beyond Differences,” a group which promotes racial harmony, wants to help teens recognize the dangers that accompany being involved with gangs and violence and provide them ways to avoid problems, two organizers said. Coordinators of the non-profit group, Paul Guy and Donald Smith, said they want to short-circuit violence starting with middle-school students in six-hour orientations. “We can’t lock up all our problems,” said Guy, a former sheriff’s deputy. The men want to use high school and college students to train younger kids. Smith, a retired minister, said if the younger teens can get an alternative message, they will be better able to adapt and avoid risky behavior and bad influences. Read More. |
