A Washington state prison inmate was brought to California for arraignment in the grisly slayings of two University of California students nearly 24 years ago. The Sheriff's Department had announced in June a DNA sample led them to Richard Hirschfield, 55, as a suspect in the killing of Sabrina Gonsalves and John Riggins, both 18. Hirschfield fought extradition, saying he wasn't the man detectives sought, but on last Saturday was transferred to Sacramento from Washington, where he was serving a 13-year sentence for child rape. His arraignment was set for last Tuesday. Investigators say the DNA evidence as well as a 2002 suicide note from Hirschfield's younger brother, Joseph - written the day after he was questioned by detectives in the case - linked the inmate to the slayings. |
