Eastern Connecticut State University event asks men to 'Walk a Mile in Her Shoes'

According to common statistics, one in four girls and one in six boys will be sexually assaulted by the time they reach the age of 18 years. “Those numbers haven’t changed much over the years,” said Eastern Connecticut State University Detective Kevin Snow. Snow was one of several people who spoke before a “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” event held on campus the morning of April 9. The number for boys has risen slightly, said Snow, up from one out of five boys reporting sexual assault several years ago. The U.S. Department of Justice estimates that, on average, there is one child molester per square mile. Each predator victimizes an estimated 60 people before getting caught, according to Snow.

He spoke of one case involving an 11-year-old boy who was victimized while working his job as a paper boy. “He survived the incident,” said Snow, “but imagine the shame involved in going to his dad to talk about it. Then having to face police and go over the whole thing all over again.” This is one of the reasons why abuse so often goes unreported, said Snow, and why predators are able to hurt so many victims before getting caught. And there is an extremely high rate of recidivism, said Snow. “You have about as much chance of changing a wolf into a vegetarian as you have of solving our predation problems,” he said.
