KANSAS - On Saturday, April 20th, at 1pm, PSU social work seniors Samantha York and Mandy Lickteig, are hosting an event at Lincoln Park,Shelter #3 behind KiddieLand, for all business owners, managers and guests in the Pittsburg and the surrounding areas. Individuals attending will be provided a free lunch and experience speakers who will relay the social importance and benefits of hiring someone with a criminal past. Those speakers will include Kelli Martinez from the Kansas Department of Corrections, Stacy Hauck from Community Mental Health Center of Crawford County, and additional professional presenters who have expertise in coordinating individuals with a criminal history and employers so that both parties may benefit. Each person attending will also receive an informational packet for the Free Federal Bonding Program and the Work Opportunity Tax Credit program that is available for most businesses to receive financial incentives for hiring individuals with a felony conviction. As of February 2013, 84individuals were on parole in Crawford County. Many of those individuals have a felony conviction on their record which keeps them from getting a job. A study in 2008, by Nancy La Vigne, the director at the Justice Policy Center stated and found in her study that post-release employment was the most important predictor of recidivism and the success of an offender's reentry into the community. The purpose for the event is to help reduce the recidivism rate in our area. The outcome Mandy and Samantha would like to see for the Pittsburg area is that everyone gets an equal chance at a job they have skills and qualifications for. In turn, this would increase the amount of employed, productive, taxpaying people in the region. Read More. |
