CENTRAL COAST, Calif -- According to the numbers released by the California Department of Corrections, there's an increase of times sex offenders try to cut off their GPS devices.

The data shows a 65% rise in sex offenders tracked by GPS who went off radar.

From October 2011 to January of this year, the CDCR issued nearly 5,000 warrants for sex offenders who cut off their GPS trackers.

"The numbers that we recently released are numbers of the incidents so every time anyone cut the strap, the numbers on that list," says California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation Spokesperson Luis Patino. "Before, we've given the number of individuals because many of these individuals cut the strap off more than once."

During 2012, warrants issued for fugitive sex offenders in San Luis Obispo County totaled 12. In Santa Barbara County, 11 warrants were issued. In Santa Cruz County 19 warrants were issued and in Monterey County 14 warrants were issued for fugitive sex offenders. But the CDCR says in most cases, these fugitives were caught relatively quickly.
