Advice column written for guys behind the bars |

A new advice column with a very narrow target audience and a limited circulation begins next month. The column is written by former convicts for men who are now behind bars. The first of the columns will run in the October "Only Voice" -- the monthly prison newspaper at Turney Center Industrial Prison and Farm in Only, Tenn. The advisers call themselves the Inner Circle and they dispense advice to inmates who will soon be released from confinement. Director Tim Dempsey of Chattanooga Endeavors says the idea for the column came about because there are few support programs for people being released from prison. Dempsey says about 40 percent of the inmates are released with 75 dollars and a bus ticket -- and no support or supervision. Dempsey says the column will be a valuable asset for prisoners and he hopes it can be expanded to reach inmates at other prisons. |
