RSU program changes way it disciplines

OLD ORCHARD BEACH – The Juvenile Justice Advisory Group, a statewide organization that operates under the Maine Department of Corrections, awarded an $83,030 grant to Regional School Unit 23 to implement and advance an alternative disciplinary model known as “restorative justice.” The approach seeks to make reparations for crimes committed by juveniles through community involvement and direct interaction between the victim and offender.

Maine State Police Sgt. Jonathan Shapiro, who helped the district develop its program, said one failure of courts is “they never focus on the needs of the victims, just the criminals.”

“In a restorative model, rather than retributive, the victim is up front and heard, at the center of focus, not the offender,” Shapiro said. “The reality is, this process is more difficult; you have to face your victim and make it right.
