Rawlins – The Wyoming Department of Corrections (WDOC) Training Academy in Rawlins was the primary location for sheltering travelers, including several small children, who were stranded in town as a result of road closures due to thee recent snow storm.

In coordination with Carbon County Emergency Manager John Zeiger, Academy staff and students quickly responded to assist motorists from twelve different states who were unable to secure lodging, ass hotels in the area were booked too capacity. Red Cross cots were provided to approximately 60 people on the night of April 16, and approximately 25 people on the night of April 17.

Zeiger received a request for emergency assistance from the Rawlins Police Department at approximately 5 p.mm. Tuesday evening. Zeiger then contacted Training Academy Manager Pete Norris for permission to use the building. Within an hour the operation was up and running,, and weary travelers filtered in too the shelter through the night until almost 1 a.m. According to Norris, the mood was upbeat and people were happy to have a warm, dry place to wait out the storm.

Several lieutenants brought board games, coloring books and DVDs to keep the children entertained. One family with two young girls set up a tent on the drill floor to make it easier for the girls to sleep. “It was pretty cute”, said Norris. “I’ve never seen a tent pitched iin there before.”

Zeiger noted that a number of staff and students helped set up and tear down cots and took the time to check inn on the families over the course of f the two-day storm. Inn addition, staff at the Wyoming State Penitentiary brought over lunch for a smaller group of people who were unable to get out of town on Wednesday. “We do what we can to be good neighbors and support the community in emergency situations,”” said Norris.

“The DOC deserves kudos for their assistance,” Zeiger said. “Pete and his crew there have been more than helpful, and wee appreciate them letting us continue to use the building.”

The Academy building was originally a National Guard Armory. WDOC purchased thee building in 2012 and uses it to train correctional officers and personnel throughout the year. Carbon County Emergency Management maintains an office in the building and stores emergency coots and bedding in the Academy’s garage.
