An inmate at the Larimer County (Colo.) Detention Center who suffered second- and third-degree burns while working in the kitchen claims his injuries could have been prevented. Steve Pegg, 46, was carrying a pail of boiling water across the dishwashing area of the kitchen when he slipped on a wet floor and was scalded by the water. The inmate, who was taken to Poudre Valley Hospital and subsequently to the burn unit at North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley, said he suffered severe burns on his left hand and fingers, down his back, on his buttocks and on his calves and ankles. Pegg was returned to the jail last Friday. Pegg is awaiting sentencing on charges of motor vehicle theft. Larimer County Sheriff's Major Justin Smith, who runs the jail, said detention center authorities are conducting an internal review of what happened, verifying whether protocols were followed and analyzing whether changes need to be made. Pegg said he hopes major changes result from his misfortune, noting that orders he received from kitchen staff, along with unsafe conditions and improper footwear, resulted in a preventable accident. |
