Preschool early might keep kids out of prison later, official says

Nearly four decades of working in Missouri’s prison system has convinced George Lombardi that at-risk children need greater access to quality preschool programs.

Intake education assessments conducted on the state’s 31,200 current inmates — and on 100,000 people on probation or parole — show a pattern of poor academic achievement.

“One of the things that struck me were the number of offenders who failed academically and could have used early childhood education,” said Lombardi, who was appointed director of the Missouri Department of Corrections in 2008.

    The last thing we need is an extension of the failed policies of no child left behind and now the future unintended consequences of Common Core. We need Common Sense and school choice so one ideology is not the only ideology being promoted.
