Two inmates who escaped from Bayside State Prison in New Jersey were apprehended less than two hours after they fled the minimum security facility last Sunday night. Officers in the tower at nearby Southern State Prison observed Donald Reese, 44, and Ibn Muhammad, 31, running across the field at Bayside, which is a prison farm operation, at 8:18 p.m., according to New Jersey Department of Corrections spokesman Matt Schuman. "They saw the two men get into a vehicle and radioed the prison. Other law enforcement agencies, including state police from Port Norris and officers from Southern State gave chase to the vehicle on Route 47 heading north. They stopped the car on Buckshutem Road in Mauricetown," Schuman said last Monday. "The two got out of the car and ran into the woods. Reese was located at 8:55 p.m. and Muhammad was found in the woods at 10:40 p.m. They were both in custody and back at Southern State (a medium-security prison) at 11:45 p.m.," he said. Both escapees were from Essex County, Schuman said. "Muhammad was coming up for parole in December, only three months from now." He was serving five to 10 years for weapons charges, eluding police, and receiving stolen property, an offense committed Oct. 15, 1993. Reese was eligible for parole in 2006, he said. He was serving a term of 15 to 30 years for manslaughter committed on Feb. 22, 1992. As per routine, a stand-up count was immediately conducted at the prisons, but only Reese and Muhammad were missing, he said. Both will now face charges of escape and the possibility of an additional three to five years imprisonment. "And this was just for an hour or so of freedom," Schuman commented. |
