Temporary prison frame collapses |

The wooden framework of a temporary jail under construction in Newport collapsed last Monday, setting the project behind its mid-December completion goal. Two walls and the portion of the roof frame that was assembled fell while workers were on the site, Campbell County Jailer Greg Buckler said. No one was injured. "It all came tumbling down this morning (Monday)," Buckler said. "I've been checking on the construction workers. Six were working on the site. They were working on the opposite side of where the collapse started. Once it started, it was like a domino effect, and they had time to jump back." The cause of the collapse was not immediately known. State inspectors, who were not notified of the collapse until The Post informed them last Monday afternoon, said they planned to investigate the accident. The temporary jail is being built on Central Avenue between Fifth and Sixth streets, near the permanent jail. Whalen Inc., a Milford, Ohio, contractor, is building the jail after winning the contract for $773,000. Whalen Owner Terry Perkins could not be reached for comment, and a company employee declined comment. Campbell County Administrator Robert Horine said the project was set back by an undetermined amount of time. |
