Newport News (Va.) jail officials are paying closer attention to inmates' shoes after a prisoner recently stabbed his cellmate with a crude knife fashioned from the steel shank of a boot or shoe. "I may just have to ban all street shoes," said Sheriff C.E. "Chuck" Moore. "Even some dress shoes have those steel supports." In the meantime, Moore has instructed officers who work at the downtown jail to run a hand-held metal detector across every prisoners' shoes. If they have metal in them, deputies will confiscate them, said Lt. Col. Eileen Sprinkle, jail administrator. In that case, the sheriff's office, which runs the jail, will issue the prisoners sneakers. Many state and local jails forbid street shoes and give prisoners shower shoes, flip-flops or sneakers. |
