WICHITA, Kansas — A Wichita police captain received quite a surprise on the job Friday.

John Speer thought he was just going to a meeting at city hall when the mayor and city manager surprised him with the Excellence in Public Service Award.

They also gave him a $2,500 check.

“I don’t know if I’m deserving of such recognition, but all I can say is thank you,” said Capt. Speer.

The Devore Foundation also awarded Kimber Kasitz, a school nurse with Wichita Public School District USD 259 and Jay Holmes, a community corrections administrator with Sedgwick County.
