Authorities were hunting Monday for an inmate serving time for attempted murder who escaped from a maximum security medical facility in Tennessee and a prison officer officials think helped him get away. Edward McDaniel, 37, escaped from the DeBerry Special Needs facility late Saturday or Sunday. He is believed to be traveling with corrections officer Vickie Sanford, 51, who didn't show up for work Sunday morning, officials said. Authorities are looking for Sanford's black 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport with Tennessee license PTG 836, said Amanda Sluss, Department of Correction spokeswoman. McDaniel was serving a 20-year-sentence, with release set for 2015, for shooting a Benton County deputy five times in the leg during a traffic stop. The DeBerry facility houses inmates who have special needs, such as medical care, mental health treatment or other conditions that can be treated at a hospital. Officials wouldn't disclose why McDaniel was there. Sanford has been working at the prison inconsistently since 2002. Authorities don't know how McDaniel escaped or the nature of his relationship with Sanford. The only evidence left behind was McDaniel's prison-issued clothes apparently placed in his bed to make it look like he was sleeping. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, Nashville police, the U.S. Marshals Service and other agencies are involved in the manhunt, Sluss said. |
