Correctional officers keep Virginia safe

During the first full week of May, the commonwealth marks National Correctional Officers’ Week, and we pause to reflect on the work our officers do every day and their role in making the commonwealth a safer place to live.

Correctional officers have earned our thanks and deep appreciation for all they do for the Virginia Department of Corrections, the people of Virginia and the offenders under their supervision. Virginia’s correctional officers have helped us achieve the second-lowest recidivism rate in the country.

Building on a foundation of safety and security, the Virginia Department of Corrections is focused on offenders’ successful re-entry into their communities. Correctional officers have incorporated evidence-based practices into their daily work and are providing offenders with guidance, education and rehabilitation.
