INDIANA - MUNCIE — Looking back, Ray Dudley, a Delaware County sheriff’s deputy, can remember times when his job would have benefited greatly from education on mental health issues. Whether de-escalating domestic violence situations or speaking with residents with substance abuse issues involved in public altercations, law enforcement officers have traditionally been trained to end conflicts and then leave. After attending an inaugural week-long “Crisis Intervention Team” training, organized by leaders from the Delaware County chapter of the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI), Ball State University and Meridian Health Services, Dudley and other attendees learned when dealing with residents suffering with mental illness, ending things quickly might cause more harm than good.
