An employee at a state-funded halfway house died trying to break up a fight between two teenage inmates in Florida, officials said.
Bert Radford, 36, died Saturday of what may have been a heart attack or seizure, although the exact cause remained undetermined Monday, said Florida Department of Juvenile Justice spokesman Tom Denham.
An inspector general's team from the department did a preliminary investigation that determined the death was the result of a medical condition. Staffers performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation but were unable to save Radford.
The boys involved will be disciplined for the fight but will receive no additional punishment for the death, Denham said.
Radford worked for the North American Family Institute, a private residential treatment facility for male juvenile delinquents from 13 to 18 years old. Counselors were sent to the facility in this Florida Panhandle city to meet with boys who may have seen the fight.
